Hidden in southeastern South America, Uruguay is a country small in size and population, but huge in sporting opportunity. The small friendly country is overshadowed by Brazilian wetlands to its north and Argentina’s Cordoba to its west. The areas that make up Uruguay and Argentina’s famous wing shooting provinces are split by the Uruguay River and its tributaries. The main tributary, the Rio Negro is the home of the Portela brother’s Black River Outfitter, our Estancia San Cirilo, and the life line for South America’s famed wing shooting. These estuaries, tributaries, and rivers create a delta in western Uruguay that has forever been providing the continent’s southern provinces with the greatest hunting destinations in South America.
The expanses of estuaries, marshes, and agriculture surrounding Black River’s Estancia San Cirilo provides opportunities to hunt destinations rivaled only by the Argentina of the 1970′s. With the growth and expansion of outfitters across the eastern provinces of Argentina, Uruguay’s Black River Outfitter has become the new frontier for traditional sportsmen and woman seeking secluded, unpressured destinations.

This destination provides our guests with a remedy for the pains of North America’s off season.
During the peak summer months in North America, (May, June, July, and August) western Uruguay‘s Laguna Negra and the surrounding rice country are host to millions of migrating ducks and the select guests of Black River outfitter. The Lodge is located just to the east of Uruguay’s huge reservoir and right in the middle of South America’s great migration.

Estancia La Paz
Estancia La Paz, Paysandu, Uruguay – Black River Outfitters
This estancia was first used by the Portela brothers, owners and managers of Black River Outfitters, in 2004 to provide lodging to pigeon, dove and perdiz hunters.
This mix bag package offered by them has recently (for the 2009 season) been added with duck hunting to make it a full local mix bag. This addition has been considered as an important upgrade.
They were the first company to bring hunters to this northwestern area in the country.
